Pianist \u003cstrong\u003eJoe Armon-Jones\u003c\/strong\u003e’ playing repeatedly recalls the work of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.com\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Lonnie+Liston+Smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLonnie Liston Smith\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e; first on the space-echoed opening trills of “The Philosopher,” and again on the hair-raising arpeggios that fill up “People In Trouble.” The entire unit plays together so tight, it’s as if it were their cosmic duty to make this record. On the penultimate track, \u003cstrong\u003eJames Mollison\u003c\/strong\u003e resets the vibe with half a minute of solo tenor before the crew launch into a stunning afrobeat rework of \u003cstrong\u003eSun Ra\u003c\/strong\u003e’s “\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.com\/search?\u0026amp;q=Space%20Is%20The%20Place\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Sun%20Ra%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"\u003eSpace Is The Place\u003c\/a\u003e.” Originally released last fall, the EP quickly went out of print and is now changing hands for upwards of $70, so this repress is a crucial second chance if you missed it the first time around.
